Within the series of overly commercialised days that the gods of marketing insist we observe, Valentines is regarded as perhaps the most significant in terms of making us feel wretched. If single we are are expected to feel lonely, if with a partner we are expected to jump through hoops of agonising angst wondering if we've done enough to keep the person in our lives happy, or . . . oooohhhhh . . . they might just leave us because we are not generous enough.
