Audemars super sized version of the Royal Oak, the Offshore, has with its 44mm minimum size, and various different version climbing up to - with the limited edition terminator model - 50mm, been the watch of choice for someone looking to find a luxury sports Wrist-watch with that little something extra - heft and size.
It's getting on a bit now, aside from its various different limited editions, the base model has had only the most minor alterations since its original release some 15 years ago. A year ahead of Audemars Piguets big 40th anniversary of the Royal Oak - the Wrist-watch which made sports casual acceptable at the highest level of manufacture - we find the house has re-issued the Offshore for 2011.
The first thing that strikes when looking at the new Offshore watches is how elegant they look in comparison to the previous Offshore models, Indeed their designer Octavio Garcia stated the new collection is 'restrained'.
The new collection very much has a racing feel to it, with subtle touches of red to make it look a little more racy, but straight away looking at the hour markers a significant difference is noted between this and the previous version, the elegant applied markers replace the fat arabic numerals of the older model. Along with this come changes in the case, retaining of course the 44mm size it is now available in either rose gold, steel or forged carbon, and significantly all the models feature a carbon bezel and carbon pushers, an excellent choice for bringing this model bang up to date.
Additionally all standard models of this new 2011 offshore feature an exhibition back, so you can see its calibre 3126/3840 heart beating away. Pricing starts from £24,000 for the steel, £28,000 for carbon and £45,000 for Pink gold.
