More a marketing move than one specifically designed to commemorate any particular event, YSL's Opium Fragrance is set to be released in a special limited edition bottle and sold exclusively in Harrods in the the next two months.
Originally released in 1977, the Opium fragrance managed to elicit a huge amount of controversy, due in part to its name, but also the advertising campaign which displayed a Languid Jerry Hall looking like she had just taken a hit from an Opium pipe. The furore hit its peak in the Christmas of that year when it was set to be released, when the U.S. Government refused to allow it to be released until they were certain it did not encourage drug use. Combined with the general mystery surrounding the eventual release, the perfume went on to be the biggest selling fragrance product of 1977, outselling in the christmas period the entire years sales of all other perfumes of that year.
Moving on 33 years it sits sort mid range, and is more a fragrance for late 30's and up to 50 years old Women, makes sense then this release of an overpriced limited edition bottle, as only those who may have bought it back in the 70's and now are either married or professional Women that have some nostalgia for the Scent would have the means or the willingness to purchase it.
The bottle itself is a traditional style of the Opium bottle, but has been adorned with 3700 Swarovski Crystals, in a process that apparently takes some 16 hours to complete. for all those interested the price is £995.
