The name of the brand 1882 is somewhat misleading. While the family which owns it can lay claim to being the latest in a dynasty of the Johnson family, a hugely successful pottery maker dating back to 1882, the history of the brand has been far from a continuous path of unbroken business. Indeed, the Johnson Brothers company was bought by Wedgewood in 1968, with manufacturing transferred from Staffordshire to China in 2003, and finally the Johnson Brothers brand being discontinued after Fiskars took over in 2015
However, the newer 1882 brand which sprung up from these ashes has successfully continued the pedigree, and is making exceptional tableware. For 2021, they have released an equally exceptional range of luxury scented candles in outstanding candleholders.
The four piece capsule comprises design led concepts. With the eye of Snarkitecture, Bruce Mclean, Max Lamb and Bethan Gray, all longstanding 1882 collaborators, the selection was pretty certain to be a hit.
The candleholders do not disappoint. The signature scent of the candle contains a blend of the most luxurious raw materials, including sandalwood, amber, and earthy florals. What really makes these stand out however is in a world of disposable candle vessels, each of these four, Crockery, Lustre, Ceramic Garden and Dissolve, are painstakingly thought up to be enjoyed in their own right as items of beauty.
Such exceptionalism does not come cheap however; Max Lamb's Crockery, Bruce Maclean's Ceramic Garden and Snarkitecture's Dissolve all costing £185, and Bethan Gray's Lustre coming in at £225. Available now from 1882's website.
