U-Boat, the Italian watch brand started in 2000 has become famous for it's questionable history page of it's website, which talks about a mysterious 'commission" to design a watch for the Italian Navy being the foundation of the brand, and some utterly bizarre comments about everyone who works for their UK outlets being younger than 30, has up until fairly recently only been known for one other thing, producing massive, ugly, cheap watches.
This trend has started to change in the past year however, not the website, that still carries the weird history and schizophrenic comments, but the watches produced by the brand are becoming something that can actually be regarded as wearable.
The latest watch from U-Boat which manages to be held in some regard is the new U-51 Chimera Bronze. One critcism of the U-51 watches previously has been the fact that despite being a massive 51mm in size, it felt as cheap as the prices, by using new materials, such as gold, ceramic, titanium and PVD coated steel, they have succeeded in shaking off the stigma of cheapness, the Chimera Bronze, hewn as it is from a solid piece of bronze, feels absolutely right.
The 51mm dimension suit the Bronze perfectly, it couldn't be more appropriate, the average Valjoux movement is of no importance here, as you are buying the watch for its appearance, and if you want a boldly masculine wristwatch, the Chimera Bronze U-51, limited to 300 pieces worldwide is the place to look. Priced at £6,000 and available now
