May 16th Sale of Important Watch at Christies sets a new benchmark in the world of Rolex valuation.

May 16 2011 is now an important date for the collectors of Rolex vintage and collectible watches, for it was on this day that a 1942 Rolex Chronograph broke all previous Rolex Auction records, and set yet another high in their valuation charts.

The auction which was held by Christies in the Four Seasons Hotel des Bergues in Geneva, presented a wide selection of outstanding vintage timepieces.  Some of the usual suspects were present, such as the stand out lot of the auction, featured centre of the catalogue cover, a Patek phillipe white Gold chronograph went for $3.6 million, and the other two cover stars, both Pateks went for over $1 million also.

However the Rolex chronograph, pictured top left of the cover, managed to achieve $1.17 million, including buyers premium.  Smashing all previous Rolex auction records, and exceeding the highest estimated price it was expected to achieve of $1.13 million.

The watch itself is made from stainless steel and features a reference 4113 movement, a nickel finished lever movement at 17 jewels, silver dials and pink gold combination numerals.  Also the time piece features outer minute divisions, coloured telemeter and tachymeter scale, 30 minutes register.  Accroding to reports the Rolex 4113 caliber's were given to famous race drivers and owners during the 1940's, and that of this particular watch only 12 were ever made.
