In a bold move, Rolex have released a completely new wristwatch for 2012, rather than a re-issue or tweaking of old models such as has been seen in previous years, they have opted to create something quite different. The Rolex Sky Dweller.
As can be clearly seen in the Images here, the Sky dweller uses the classic Datejust case style, but in a new 42mm size, the difference between this and the standard model can be instantly recognised on the dial, a layout never before seen on any Rolex, featuring date, time, and second time zone under the standard, and, a first on Rolex Wristwatches, an annual Calendar.
All this is thanks to the new Caliber 9001 movement, a in house movement which has been rigourously tested by Rolex over recent years, developed in secret, and launched to acclaim some five days ago at BaselWorld. The movement gives the Annual Calender thanks to a patented complication they call SAROS, which puts the Annual calendar underneath the hour marker, so you are given the traditional date, and under the hour marker the month, for example, the Watch pictured gives the date as the 26th of August.
The new Sky Dweller offers consumers a genuine alternative to some of the higher end brands complicated Watches, for years Rolex has survived on the reputation of being sturdy, reliable, and a marketing machine envied by all and sundry, which leaves no-one NOT knowing what it means to own a Rolex, with this Watch they also present a Complication that makes them just that little bit more noticed by the Horological Community.
It's only drawback is some people may dislike the face layout as not being traditional enough, for many Rolex lovers it's easy to imagine this being a genuine issue, however, this watch is clearly more about securing new business from people who might not previously have bought a Rolex, and in that sense they may have succeeded.
Available at first only in White Yellow and "Everose" Gold, it will be priced at around £30,000 on release this Month.
