Dom Perignon have now acquired the habit of releasing limited edition "themed" releases just in time for Christmas and New Year, a coincidence? We think not. For 2011 they released the Andy Warhol pop art bottles, which managed to become wildly successful, with even empty bottles selling on eBay for more than some full ones without the limited edition sticker. For 2012 Dom Perignon have gone with David Lynch, the grandfather and auter of disturbing cinema, to produce two bottling's with limited edition labels and boxes.
Apparently "Over the last year, David Lynch and Dom Perignon have enjoyed a close and fruitful relationship" quite what this means is somewhat of a mystery, presumably it means they have been supplying him with lots of free bottles of champagne in exchange for his efforts to produce a limited edition product they can market. Moving on it was apparently made by leaving David Lynch in a studio alone with the bottles for a certain amount of time, after which he presented them his vision.
Marketing nonsense aside, what we have here is a very pretty bottle which houses a very nice champagne, it comes in two versions, a 2000 vintage rose and a 2003 vintage Brut, and try as you might, disgusted by all the hyperbole, it is almost impossible not to actually like, and be slightly impressed by the gift box and bottle label, "mystery" is the name of the work David Lynch presented, and it really does feel quite mysterious, and quite special.
the best thing about it though, is it may be limited, but you do not pay a massive premium for that exclusivity, rather, the 2003 Brut, which in a normal gift box retails between £100 and £150 depending on the location you buy, in this limited edition commands the same price. The rose, being a more exclusive vintage, a standard Rose 2000 vintage retails for £300 to £350, again depending on where you shop, and this David Lynch edition Rose sells for the same. Move fast though, limited means limited, you don't want to end up looking at only ebay auctions for empty bottles at more than the cost of full ones.
