Although "The Row" launching in 2006 has come as a considerable surprise to members of the fashion industry and press, the Olsen twins Mary-Kate and Ashley, creating a brand which aspired to be a luxury brand rather than just some cutesy pretty-in-pink bubblegum style marketing ploy masqeradeing as a fashion brand, what has come as far more of a surprise is just how serious a venture it has turned out to be, and after 6 years, an absolute age in the fashion world, long-lived.
Far from what was to be expected, The Row has produced elegant classics with new twists, seriously high quality collectable pieces, which and Woman would be proud to wear, and has made a name for itself for two thing, casual elegant and yet youthful style, and genuinely "Made in the USA" fashion, a rare thing in todays market.
Another thing they became known for is the ultra expensive crocodile backpack that has become the signature piece of the brand, spacious inside, and with gold plated hardware, not that you would care, as if you want to spend £20,000 on a backpack, the capacity is probably irrelevant to you.
And it is this backpack which has been taken, and in a collaboration with Damien Hirst, "improved", the Hirst/The Row collaboration has borne fruit with 12 one off backpacks, each of which a reminiscent of Hirst's Spot paintings, and the Pharmacy installations.
The purpose is to raise money for UNICEF a portion of each bag sale will go to UNICEF, and they are being sold exclusively through www.justoneeye.com, the website famous for championing young artists.
Each bag, as the website states, blur the line between high art and high fashion, the contrast between the Nile crocodile leather in black patent, and Hirst's playful designs is startling. Each bag retails for £40,000 each, but since you are essentially buying a useable Damien Hirst, not merely an expensive backpack, this price could almost be considered reasonable, and will be sure to only go up in value over time.
