In 1953 Guccio Gucci created what was to become the iconic shoe of the 1950's, 60's and 70's, practically anyone who was anyone could be seen wearing a pair of Gucci horsebit loafers, names include Douglas Fairbanks Junior, John Wayne, Clark Gable, Sir David Frost, Richard Nixon, Francis Ford Coppola, the list goes on and on.
What makes the shoe even moe impressive is the fact that it still exactly 60 years later continues to be a go-to shoe for smart, formal and casual, it can be dressed down with jeans, dressed down with a suit, of worn with weekend favourites for all round appeal, this has meant that a new generation, and subsequently a new generation of stars, have found the shoe, names include Leonardo Di-Caprio, Shia Lebouf, Will Smith, and again, the list goes on.
So for their 60th Anniversary Gucci have re-issued the original shoe, and for the re-issue they have gone right back to the original stlye that was so loved, gone are the aggressively round toe of the style which was born in the 80's and has since become known as the classic, and rather we have the softer and more elegant line of the first ever horsebit loafer.
As well as the exterior being true to the original, they have also used a special vintage style label inside the shoe also, one which echoes the stitched on labels of that period, and with the same font and sizing as was used, but with the moniker "1953" on the label to mark it out as the vintage collection.
To cap it all off Gucci will be releasing this 60th Anniversary shoe in a dazzling array of colours, no less than 20 different options available for both Men and Women, a selection of which are displayed here, the Womens shoe has a slightly more rounded toe than the Mens, but other wise they are very similar, in terms of quantities on the market, no specific announcement has been made that this is a limited edition product, so we can therefore assume that this shoe is essentially a new continuity range at Gucci until we are informed differently.
In terms of price this shoe fluctuates wildly, on the Mens side prices range from £390 for the basic calf or suede shoe up to 560 for the spike studded version seen below, in the Womens range prices vary massively due to the leathers used, it is possible to have python or crocodile on the Womens shoes, meaning that prices range from between £345 for the basic shoe and £1900 for the Python type. Available now in Gucci boutiques and online.
